How Much Does an Electric Vehicle Cost in Australia?

By EVFinancer TeamPublished: 3 April 20267 min read

The EV market in Australia has come a long way. A few years ago, your options were limited and expensive. Now, there are electric vehicles available at a range of price points, from budget-friendly hatchbacks to high-end SUVs and utes.

So how much should you expect to pay? Let us break it down.

Entry-level EVs

If you are looking for an affordable way into electric driving, there are now several models available under the $50,000 mark (RRP before on-road costs)—including BYD Atto 1 from $23,990, Dolphin from $29,990, MG4 Urban and GAC Aion UT around $31,990, and others. These tend to be smaller hatchbacks or compact SUVs with moderate range, typically between 300 and 400 kilometres on a full charge.

These vehicles suit city and suburban drivers who do not need to cover huge distances daily and have access to home charging.

Shopping under $50k often means trade-offs on range and spec — your loan term should match those trade-offs.

A broker can help you avoid a mismatch between how long you keep the car and how the loan is structured.

Mid-range EVs

The mid-range sits roughly between $50,000 and $90,000 depending on brand and spec. This is where you will find the most choice. Mid-range EVs typically offer longer range (400 to 550 kilometres), more cabin space, better tech, and improved build quality.

This bracket is popular with families and small business owners who want a practical, capable vehicle without venturing into luxury territory.

Premium and performance EVs

At the top end, EVs range from roughly $90,000 to well over $200,000. These include luxury SUVs, performance sedans, and flagship tourers. Range, performance, and interior quality are all top-tier.

For business buyers, the tax treatment of these vehicles can make the effective cost more manageable than the sticker price suggests, but that depends on your individual circumstances. Have a chat with your accountant.

Do not forget the total cost of ownership

The purchase price is only part of the picture. EVs are generally cheaper to run day to day thanks to lower fuel and servicing costs. When you factor in those savings over the life of the vehicle, the real cost gap between an EV and a comparable petrol car narrows significantly, and in some cases disappears entirely.

Used EVs: a more affordable entry point

If a new EV is outside your budget, the used market is worth a look. Prices for second-hand EVs have become more accessible as more models enter the market and fleet turnover increases. You can often find a well-maintained used EV for considerably less than a new one.

How does finance fit in?

Most people do not pay cash for a vehicle. Financing an EV lets you spread the cost over time and start enjoying the lower running costs straight away.
