Best Electric Utes Coming to Australia

By EVFinancer TeamPublished: 16 March 20269 min read

The electric ute is the vehicle category Australians have been waiting for. Utes are the best-selling vehicle type in the country, and electric versions are now entering or about to enter the market.

If you are a tradie, farmer, fleet manager, or anyone who relies on a ute for work or play, here is what you need to know.

What Is Available Now And What Is Coming

The electric ute market in Australia is evolving quickly. Current examples: the Toyota HiLux BEV is listed from $74,990–$82,990 + on-road costs, and the KGM Musso EV is around $60,000 drive-away depending on offer and state. Several more models have been announced or are expected to arrive within the next 12 to 24 months from both established and newer manufacturers.

Upcoming (timing TBC): models such as the MG U9 EV and Isuzu D-Max EV have been flagged—confirm availability, pricing, and delivery time frames with dealers as the market is changing rapidly.

The early entries tend to be dual-cab models aimed at both commercial and lifestyle buyers. Single-cab and chassis-cab variants (more common in heavy commercial use) are expected to follow.

What To Expect From An Electric Ute

Towing and payload. This is the big question. Early electric utes offer rated towing capacities comparable to their petrol and diesel counterparts, but range drops significantly under load. If you regularly tow heavy loads over long distances, the maths needs to work for your specific situation. For shorter towing runs or lighter loads, electric utes handle it well.

Shopping under $50k often means trade-offs on range and spec — your loan term should match those trade-offs.

A broker can help you avoid a mismatch between how long you keep the car and how the loan is structured.

Range. Labeled range varies a lot by model and battery size, but with a loaded tray or while towing, real-world range often falls into roughly a 200–300 km band depending on weight, speed, and terrain—always test against your actual use case.

Torque. Electric motors deliver maximum torque from standstill, which means electric utes feel strong and responsive. For off-road use, low-speed control is excellent.

Running costs. Just like any EV, fuel and servicing costs are lower than a diesel equivalent. For a fleet of utes doing regular kilometres, the savings add up fast.

Is An Electric Ute Ready For Tradies?

It depends on how you use your ute. If your typical day involves driving around a metro area, visiting job sites, and carrying tools and materials in the tray, an electric ute will likely suit you well. Overnight home charging covers your daily driving, and the lower running costs are a genuine advantage.

If you regularly drive long distances on rural roads, tow heavy equipment, or spend extended time away from reliable charging infrastructure, the current crop of electric utes may not be the perfect fit yet. That will change as range improves and the charging network expands, but it is worth being honest about your needs right now.

How To Finance An Electric Ute

The finance structures are the same as for any commercial vehicle. For business buyers, chattel mortgage and finance lease are the most common options, both offering potential tax advantages. For personal buyers, a secured consumer loan works well.

If you are also looking at financing a traditional ute alongside or instead of an electric one, ute finance is available through the same broker team. And if you need to finance a trailer to go with your ute, trailer finance is covered too.
